Steam, Valve’s gaming platform, has set a new user record. Over the weekend, over 31.9 million people were online, although not all were actively playing. We’ll tell you the exact numbers and which multiplayer games were particularly popular.
What was that record? According to the SteamDB platform, 31,906,400 users were logged into Steam on November 27 at 3:20 p.m. German time. Of these, 9,423,733 were actively gambling – also a record since recording began at the end of 2017. The other almost 20 million accounts were online but were not playing at the time.
It was not until October 2022 that the previous record was set with 30.049 million users.
The user record came about as a result of a mixture of different factors. In America, Thanksgiving was celebrated on Thursday, which traditionally leads to a long weekend. However, it was still quite early in America – between 6:20 and 9:20 am – which is why Europeans also play an important role in the numbers.
The weather and the autumn sale on Steam were probably the deciding factors here. By the way, the sale runs until November 29th. The release of Warzone 2 from the previous week was also important because the title was one of the most successful games. You can watch the launch trailer again here:
All-time favorites dominate Steam over the weekend
Which games had the most players? At the time of the record, #1 was a game that almost always dominates the Steam charts: Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. The shooter, which is published by Valve itself, had 1.009 million players at the time of the record and is generally one of the most successful shooters in the world.
MOBA DOTA 2 came in second with 839,000 players. The game is also distributed by Valve itself and is the strongest competitor to LoL in America and Europe.
The Battle Royale PUBG made it to third place, which was able to inspire 408,000 players. This game has also been a hit on Steam for years and regularly breaks the 400,000 concurrent players. However, the game experienced its peak in 2018 with around 3 million simultaneous players.
The first new title is in fourth place. Warzone 2 won it with 384,000 players. That was also the highest number of players for the entire weekend.
It is interesting that around 25% of all active players on Steam were logged into one of these four online games.
Where are the biggest MMORPGs? With Lost Ark, the first MMORPG made it to 5th place in the ranking. At least 276,000 players were online here. Around 71,000 players were online in New World at the time of the record, which was enough for the top 10.
However, both MMORPGs are only playable on Steam (at least the western version of Lost Ark), so – as with DOTA 2 and CS:GO – these are the final player numbers. Other online titles usually offer their own clients.
ESO (21,700 players), Black Desert (18,600 players) and Final Fantasy XIV (17,000) also made it into the top 5 MMORPGs.
