It is always said that we need to invest more in young talent and education. That’s exactly what franchise captain Alex Kurtzman and Paramount+ are doing with the upcoming series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. A Young Adult format with a Riverdale target audience who may not have seen a lot of sci-fi or even Star Trek. At least when it comes to the backdrop, there is no skimping.
As Variety reports in an article about the future of Star Trek, Starfleet Academy students have plenty of space to let off steam in futuristic and academic terms. The set at Pinewood Toronto Studios is namely a whopping 45,900 square feeti.e. over 4,200 square meters.
That is more gigantic than any previous Star Trek series set. Relatively manageable spaceships don’t need a two-story university with a canteen, an amphitheater, green spaces, a catwalk, several seminar rooms and a view of the Golden Gate Bridge in a fictitious San Francisco.

When the series was ordered, the creators wrote the description of the format as Starfleet Academy Announcement (via StarTrek.com):

For the first time in over a century, our campus is reopening to admit individuals of at least 16 Earth years (or species equivalent) who dream of exceeding their physical, mental and spiritual limitations. The series was commissioned a year ago and is currently in production with Kurtzman and Noga Landau as co-showrunners. The cast is not yet known at this star time. But just as an idea: Maybe it would be quite amusing and appropriate if former Star Trek: The Next Century greenhorn Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) suddenly appeared as a lecturer.
