Starfield needs Fallout’s best feature

MeinMMO editor Maik seems very calm from the outside. However, the hype about Starfield seethes inside him. As a big fan of the Bethesda series Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, he wants an old feature for the new Starfield that still catches him today – and the Starfield boss has already spoken out.

Good sound effects can make a real difference. Just look at shooters like Call of Duty or Battlefield. In CoD, I hear other players’ footsteps, which affects my gameplay. In Battlefield, explosions thunder, bullets whizz past my ears and create immersion.

In an RPG like Starfield, however, the acoustic effects are not that important to me. Sure, they add their part to the atmosphere. But Fallout showed me that these aren’t the explosions I need on a large-scale adventure. I need a good beat.

Which Fallout feature do you mean? I care about the radio.

I remember accidentally buying Fallout 3 from Real thinking it was Killzone for PlayStation 3. Best bad buy of my life.

The radio was my constant companion from the start. The first big adventure I had in Fallout was finding the Galaxy News Radio station with its likable DJ Three Dog.

It took countless hours, many deaths and to this day I carry with me a trauma that is closely linked to the “Fatboy” rocket launcher. But the quest really got going when I was finally able to shake hands with Three Dog. It was a really great experience that I still think about to this day.

Other than that, the music was a good distraction for me. I sometimes struggle in action roleplaying games like Fallout because I’m a crap in single player games and expect the worst at all times. I just skip most nights.

With the sound of the radio in my ear, my pulse is at least only slightly increased.

In addition, many songs have burned themselves into my brain. After Fallout 3, I’ve also been to New Vegas, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76. As soon as there’s a song on Fallout Radio somewhere, I sing along and I want to turn up the Pipboy.

GTA Online and Rocket League prove to me again and again what positive effects radio or constant game music with real songs can have on the gaming experience.

What do you know about the radio in Starfield? Unfortunately, things don’t look all that good for radio fans. Starfield boss Todd Howard has already commented on radio stations in Starfield:

There is one [Radiosender], but it’s pretty local to a certain place. It’s not something you can count on if you’re not around. But I would say a little [Radio] is there.

It sounds like there’s some sort of Galaxy News Radio quest after all. You fly through the vastness of space and accidentally receive a radio signal that leads to an interesting story.

Luckily, developer Bethesda wants to make Starfield a “modder’s paradise.” I already know what I’ll keep my eyes open for after the release.
