Star Wars villain Snoke returns in Andor – but in all-new roles

Star Wars villain Snoke returns in Andor but in

Andor starts the next story arc with an extremely exciting chapter. The 8th episode of the new Star Wars series on Disney+ takes you to a dystopian labor camp on the moon Narkina 5which could have jumped straight out of George Lucas’ other great sci-fi film: THX 1138. But that’s not all.

While we revel in Clemens Schick’s Star Wars debut in the cold, white rooms of the labor camp, Forest Whitaker returns to the galaxy far, far away as Saw Gerrera. Even more exciting is the return of Andy Serkis, who starred in the sequel trilogy as Villain Snoke was to see.

After Snoke in the sequels: Andy Serkis conquers the Andor series on Disney+ as Kino Loy

Fear not: Andor is not telling the story of young Snoke. Serkis embodies an all-new Star Wars character not seen anywhere else before. She answers the name Cinema Loy and appears as a mixture of prisoner and foreman. Loy oversees the wing where Cassian is imprisoned.

Andy Serkis as Kino Loy in Andor

Serkis’ new Star Wars role couldn’t be further from Snoke. Loy is not seated on any throne – not even as the Emperor’s puppet. Instead he is a tiny gear in the huge gear of the Empire and responsible for ensuring that his department at the labor camp delivers the desired numbers.

He orders the prisoners around strictly. Breathers will not be tolerated. as Manager of Unit Five-Two-D Kino Loy leads a tough regiment. However, it is far removed from the brutality of the imperial guards, who shock the prisoners with electrically charged floor plates if they disobey.

But what motivates Kino Loy? In an interview with Vanity Fair, Serkis reveals:

Obviously the electrification and the reward system. If you [auf Narkina 5] do your job very well, you get food with taste. If you don’t do well, you will be shocked. [Die Gefangenen] are like rats. They are literally rats in a science experiment. They all just work to survive and get by. [Kino Loy] must serve another year, then he will be released. So he doesn’t want anything to get in the way of that.

Serkis also came up with a background story for Kino Loy.

[…] before going to prison he was a union leader. He was used to working as a foreman. I wanted him to come from a place responsible for him going to jail. Maybe [hat sich Kino Loy] campaigned for workers’ rights and thereby gained an important position. He’s a born leader. But he just wants to do his time. He has a family. He wants out and back and expects that to happen after his sentence ends.

Serkis doesn’t reveal too much about the character’s future. Judging from the way he talks about Kino Loy, however, it could be that he soon quits obedience, throws discipline overboard and one leading the prison riot. Cassian must somehow escape or he’ll still be stuck on Narkina 5 during the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
