As Variety recently reported, some Star Trek fans are in for a welcome surprise. Because in Star Trek: Lower Decks we see Two characters from the Star Trek cosmos unite who were not allowed to be together for a long time.
Great chemistry between Bashir and Garak in Deep Space Nine
In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine from the 1990s, there is a legendary couple: Doctor Julian Bashir (Alexander Siddig) and Elim Garak (Andrew Robinson). The two characters first met in Season 1, Episode 3 The Khon-Ma.
Included The obvious chemistry between Bashir and Garak was convincing many spectators from the first scene. However, in 1993, a romantic relationship between two male characters was simply not tolerated on television.
So fans always had the clear attraction between Bashir and Garak, which was officially portrayed as a close friendship in the series. However, a romantic connection was never admitted by the series creators.
Finally the Star Trek dream comes true
The two actors Siddig and Robinson, in turn, supported a possible romance between their characters. This is how extensive fan fiction emerged over the decades, which Siddig and Robinson also implemented: There was not only an audio book, but also Zoom performances.
Star Trek has since brought some queer relationships to the screen. Bashir and Garak were only able to find each other this year in Season 5, Episode 9 (The Rift Mission) of the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks. In this episode, the crew explores an alternative universe and the audience meets (a hologram) Julian Bashir and his husband Elim Garak, who are of course also voiced by Siddig and Robinson in the original.
Series creator Mike McMahan saw this as an opportunity:
I enjoyed the romantic chemistry that Andrew and Sid brought to Garak and Bashir in ‘DS9’ and in the 30 years since. If there’s one thing the multiverse is good for, it’s spending time with these two newlyweds, as they explore the universe and their shared relationship.
Finally, a long-cherished fan dream came true: Bashir and Garak were also allowed to get together in the Star Trek series universe – albeit 30 years late.
