With the third season of Picard and the fifth season of Discovery, two Star Trek series will soon come to an end. However, the popular science fiction franchise will not shrink. Because Paramount + has now ordered supplies in the form of the new series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Many fans are not happy about the announcement. The call for a completely different spin-off went unheeded.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy is set to be a sci-fi teen series — and fans aren’t thrilled
With Starfleet Academy, the already 7. Star Trek Series by Paramount+ announced. Over the past six years, the streaming service has expanded the franchise with the live-action series Discovery, Picard, and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, as well as the short film series Star Trek: Short Treks. Will Tilly be in Starfleet Academy?
Expected to launch in 2025, Starfleet Academy is the first Star Trek series to center around the Training and adventures of young cadets at Starfleet Academy. Franchise boss Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau, who previously developed the youth series Nancy Drew, are in charge of creative direction.
The series is expected to take place in the 32nd century and would be a Star Trek: Discovery spin-off. In it, Season 4 reopened Starfleet Academy over a century after the fire (a galaxy-wide cataclysm that resulted in the collapse of the Federation). Main character Tilly (Mary Wiseman) left her post to teach at the Academy.
A teen series set in the Star Trek cosmos is certainly an exciting and new take on the franchise. However, following the announcement of Starfleet Academy on Twitter, the disappointment of many fans who had hoped to order another project is mounting.

Star Trek: Legacy is the series fans really want
The third season of Star Trek: Picard is currently exciting many fans. Led by showrunner Terry Matalas, this brings together The Next Generation characters with new characters, a heavy dose of nostalgia, and an exciting space story.
But it’s the last season. Terry Matalas recently shared his idea for a sequel on Twitter. His dream project is called Star Trek: Legacy. This spin-off series would tie into the events of Picard and “the last and the next generation” bring figures together.

The success of Picard season 3 shows that a Star Trek legacyquel that’s what fans want to see. Both The Next Generation returnees and new characters like Jack Crusher (Ed Speleers), USS Titan Captain Shaw (Todd Stashwick) and Sidney La Forge (Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut) inspire. A sequel could also bring back numerous characters from shows like Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine that Picard didn’t see in the finale.
The hope for new adventures in the 25th century after the end of Picard is far from lost. Starfleet Academy is just one of many projects that Alex Kurtzman says could be announced soon.
And maybe the big fan wish will come true next week. April 5, 2023 marks the annual First Contact Day celebrating the Star Trek franchise.
