Ro Laren and Jean-Luc Picard reunited

It’s been decades since Picard has seen his former Bajoran lieutenant. She once betrayed Starfleet as a defector to the Maquis, but returned to service after a period in prison and a subsequent rehabilitation program.

After initial distrust between her and Picard, Ro Laren finally reveals her true intentions for the visit. She covertly investigates the conspiracy surrounding the Changelings, which infiltrates Starfleet. The emotional reunion is short-lived, however, as Ro Laren soon has to sacrifice himself when the Changelings attack.

However, she leaves Picard all her previous notes and insights into the Changeling conspiracy. It is also revealed that she was Worf’s (Michael Dorn) contact at the Secret Service.

Ro Laren explains: Here’s what you need to know about the former traitor

The character made her first appearance in the third episode of the fifth season of Star Trek: The Next Generation aka TNG. Ro Laren is a headstrong Bajoran who served on the USS Wellington shortly after graduating from Starfleet Academy. However, during one mission, she disobeyed orders, resulting in the deaths of several officers.

Ro Laren in The Next Generation

After being court-martialed, Ro Laren was given a second chance aboard the USS Enterprise, serving under the command of Captain Picard. Because of her past, she had to prove herself to be accepted by Picard, who eventually became a kind of mentor to her.

In the end, though, Ro Laren betrayed Starfleet. She was supposed to infiltrate the Maquis, but joined them. The pain that this betrayal leaves in Picard plays a key role in Ro Laren’s return and leads to one of the most touching moments of the final season of Picard to date.
