Star Trek brings back fan favorite from the 90s for new series – and sends him 800 years into the future

Star Trek brings back fan favorite from the 90s for

The Star Trek franchise has long since entered its legacy era. After Picard brought back numerous old heroes from The Next Generation and Voyager (sorry, Deep Space Nine!), there were also a few acoustic reunions thanks to the animated series Lower Decks and Prodigy. Another Star Trek fan favorite from the 90s will soon be making its live-action return – and in an unusual setting.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy brings back the Doctor and other familiar characters

This summer, filming will begin on the new Star Trek series Starfleet Academy. It is the 10th live-action series from the science fiction franchise. For the first time, it is entirely dedicated to the adventures of a group of young cadets at the Starfleet Academy. At the San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that four well-known series characters celebrate their return.

According to TV Line, Robert Picardo and Tig Notaro were announced as the main characters of the new Star Trek series. Notaro was previously seen as engine room expert Jett Reno in Discovery. The biggest surprise, however, is the return of Picardo, known to fans as a hologram The Doctor from the adventures of the USS Voyager know.

Robert Picardo as The Doctor

For Robert Picardo, it will be the first live-action appearance in a Star Trek series since the end of Voyager in 2001. The actor recently made a vocal return in the second season of the animated series Prodigy, which you can currently stream on Netflix.

Starfleet Academy is set in the 32nd century and thus follows on from the events of Discovery. It is therefore not surprising that we also see Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) and Admiral Vance (Oded Fehr) in guest roles in the new series.

The Doctor, on the other hand, is something we only know from Star Trek adventures in the 24th century. What has the medical emergency hologram with the big heart been doing for 800 years? We’ll soon get an answer to that in Starfleet Academy.

When does the Star Trek series Starfleet Academy start?

There is no release date for Starfleet Academy yet. Since filming has not yet begun, we should assume that the new Star Trek series will start at the earliest End of 2025 or not until 2026 on Paramount+ will open.

The first season of Starfleet Academy will consist of 10 episodes. The cast includes Oscar winner Holly Hunter as the Academy Captain and Paul Giamatti as the villain.
