Star Citizen mandates mandatory overtime and eliminates weekends

Star Citizen is said to be working overtime. Journalist Tom Henderson says he has an internal email ordering mandatory overtime ahead of CitizenCon, which is scheduled for October 19th and 20th. Weekend days off have been canceled for the next two weeks.

Where does the information come from? Tom Henderson is a journalist known for having anonymous sources at gaming studios who feed him internal information. This is primarily information that goes against the grain of dissatisfied employees and which they then pass on anonymously. They do this anonymously because they don’t have permission to pass on such information, which often reflects poorly on the studio (via insider-gaming).

Why is overtime ordered? Henderson says the internal email that went out to employees on October 1 said they now have 18 days of hard work to get patch 3.42.2 for Star Citizen and the demo for Squadron 42.

Therefore, mandatory overtime is ordered for everyone who works on things that still have to be finished by CitizenCon. The next CitizenCon will take place from October 19th to 20th.

Work now takes place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday

This means specifically:

  • The employees in question should be in the office on both Fridays – normally that is a home office day.
  • Everyone should also dance in the office on the two Saturdays, October 5th and 12th. The company provides breakfast and lunch – the employees receive compensatory time off.
  • There will also be work on Sunday, October 6th and 13th. But here it is also okay if employees stay at home. But CIG would prefer it even more if they came to the office. Breakfast, lunch and free time are also provided on Sundays.
  • Is there also positive news? Employees in the UK have been told they have to be careful not to work for a full 11 hours in a 24-hour period. Apparently it’s about workers’ rights.

In addition, a second email expressly thanked the employees for the overtime – that will make a real difference.

Everyone should be free on Monday, October 21st, after the long CitizenCon weekend.

Is there any official confirmation of this? No, Henderson says CIG responded with a ‘no comment’ response. But it looks very plausible.

Henderson said the email thanking employees and giving them the day off appeared 11 minutes after his request to CIG. This implies that the day off can be seen as a “we know you’re already stinking and ratting us out to the press” compensation.

There have been repeated complaints in the past that Star Citizen doesn’t treat its employees very carefully, and there was particular criticism about pay: Employee says: “€457 million” MMO Star Citizen pays so badly that employees are back have to move with their parents
