Several teenage boys in Norrköping have suffered from scalp fungus after going to salons to get the trendy hairstyle. Now all barbers in town are to be checked, reports P4 Östergötland.
The alarm comes after ten to 15 people a month are affected by the fungal infection ringworm. These are teenage boys who have acquired the trendy hairstyle where the sides of the hair are shaved.
– We see this connection to barbers, that you cut and shave in a special way. It’s basically only guys who have been affected, says infectious disease doctor Karin Fester to the radio channel.
She describes the whole thing as an odd case, and it is unclear why Norrköping in particular was affected.
– There was an extra large spread because it is not spread via person-to-person infection, but through the barbers, says Karin Fester.
Poor cleaning may have been the starting point
The infection can be spread through razors and razors, and may have started due to poor cleaning, according to the infectious disease doctor.
Now the municipality’s environmental and health protection inspectors must check all barbers in Norrköping to stop the infection.
