Staff from smaller airports are called in to Arlanda

Swedavia has now decided to call in staff from other airports, in an attempt to curb the chaos at Arlanda, which P4 Uppland first with reporting. On Monday morning, it was reported that the situation was cautiously positive, despite continued long queues.

But there are still problems to fix. The shortage of staff is a fact.

– This is part of strengthening the staff. We bring in staff, mainly airport inspectors, who can relieve the security control, says Peter Wärring, press officer at Swedavia.

Wärring says that the extra staff, which is primarily intended to work in the security controls, may be deployed at both Landvetter and Malmö Airport, in addition to Arlanda. But due to Arlanda’s size, it is the most exposed airport.

– We are facing a summer trip and you can see how it generally increases, he says.

Extra staff in the security check is only one of the measures. Peter Wärring says that they also brought in administrative staff and school students. Their main task is to be the entrance hosts and help the travelers who come to the airport. He also says that about 130 new employees are on their way in and will start with the security checks.

Part of the the extra staff is already in place at Arlanda and on Wednesday, terminal four will also open to ease the pressure.

In an earlier statement about the airport inspectors who were called in, Ellen Laurin from Swedavia told P4 Uppland that the staff can be picked up from regional airports in Luleå and Umeå.

But how long the temporarily called staff can be asked to stay at Arlanda or one of the larger airports is still unclear, says Peter Wärring.
