Prior to the group of companies, Gearbox had similarly acquired many other game studios, including THQ Nordic, Deep Silver studios, as well as 3D Realms, which developed Duke Nukem.
What is the goal with the sale of Tomb Raider and Deus Ex?
Square Enix and Embracer Group, which have only reached an agreement yet, will sell Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montreal game studios for approximately $300 million, according to the press release. Thus, series such as Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, Thief, Legacy of Kain, which are within the body of these studios, will also change hands.
Under the deal, Embracer Group will also manage the ongoing sales and other operations of these studios’ more than 50 games.
Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal joined Square Enix in 2009. With this agreement, Embracer Group states that it moves closer to its mission of creating a leading independent and global gaming entertainment ecosystem.
It is stated that these studios want to push and expand their commercial boundaries. Square Enix sees the sale as a good opportunity to move into new and current investment areas. The sale is expected to take place between July and September 2022.
