The heads of the British and American intelligence services, MI6 and the CIA, say they are working tirelessly for a ceasefire in Gaza.
In an unusual joint statement, they call for peace.
CIA Director William Burns and MI6 Director Richard Moore state that their respective organizations have used their intelligence channels “to press for restraint and de-escalation”.
In a debate article in the Financial Times, they jointly write that a ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas “could end the suffering and terrible loss of life among Palestinian civilians and bring home the hostages after 11 months of hellish captivity”.
William Burns has been very involved in the efforts to reach a truce. Among other things, he traveled to Egypt in August to participate in high-level talks aimed at reaching an agreement. So far, however, it has not yielded results.
In their debate article, Burns and Moore further emphasize the importance of transatlantic cooperation in the face of what they call an “unprecedented amount of threats”.
