Lives in a Pineapple Under the Sea!

The new adventure of SpongeBob and his close friend Patrick begins in the style of a standard SpongeBob cartoon. Going to the Glove World, the duo encounter a mysterious salesman. Having bought the seller’s wish-granting bubble thing, our heroes begin to make the wishes of everyone in town come true. When they say wishes come true, they make soap balloons and blow them into the air, these balloons take the shape of wishes.

Realizing that the thing belongs to Neptune when they use almost all of the bubbles, the duo sees the warning that it should not be used too much. At that time, the balloons with the wishes collide, just as we expected, chaos ensues and everyone flies to an unknown place. Patrick turns into a flying balloon because why not.

SpongeBob and Balloon Patrick embark on a journey to other universes to save the townspeople, and we take control of this adventure. The story tastes exactly like a SpongeBob movie, which is good or bad depending on how much you like the series. They have also fed the multiverse theme, which has become very popular in recent years, into the story.

The contribution of the multiverse to the story is that they had the chance to use every “meme” that took the internet by storm for a while. The episodes are designed as the famous SpongeBob characters trying to get rid of the universes of their dreams. In these episodes, familiar concepts such as pirates, the wild west and halloween are used. In each episode, we get the chance to see different personalities of familiar characters. There were places where I had a lot of fun playing, but I forgot most of the story while writing the article. You’re having fun, but I don’t give a damn.

Drop That Pizza Box On The Ground!

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake is an old style 3D platformer – adventure game. You travel around with your character, collect lots of items, fulfill the wishes of those around you and try to discover hidden things. Apart from a basic attack ability, the main character also has a ranged attack, double jump ability, powerful air-to-ground attack, floating ability (with pizza box) and rolling to dodge attacks.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake PC review

We have a whole old style platform adventure game before us, a game that plays completely safe and does not offer any innovative features. The adventure that started in SpongeBob’s town takes us to many different places, we use our skills to pass the obstacles that we encounter in the levels, we encounter various enemies from time to time and finish their work with karate blows and falling on their heads. Sometimes we need to bubble it up and make it vulnerable.

The fights of the game are not difficult, we already have few combat moves, the enemies are similarly coming towards us by spamming two or three abilities. You have a hard time seeing new enemies for the first time, but when you solve the tactic, they become simple types. Our health is high, and it’s easy to reload, too.

The thing that caught my attention the most was being able to do the movements as fluently as I wanted, with a fast reaction time. Of course, I don’t play the game like I’m playing Dark Souls, but it’s too good to say “what if the character didn’t fulfill the command I pressed” if I wanted to. But that’s it, the fights stay the same at the end of the game as they were at the beginning. Luckily the game isn’t too long and doesn’t usually force fights.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake review

A universe full of side quests and coins to collect awaits us in the game. Thanks to this money, we can buy new costumes for SpongeBob. If you’ve been following the series for a long time (it’s been 20 years!), you’re likely to see any costume you can think of in this game. The costumes don’t have any additional features, it would be nicer if they added new abilities, but all it brings is the “remember that episode hehehe” feeling.

The biggest problem with the game is that it is over-guaranteed. You use the mechanics you have at the beginning until the end of the game. There are some changes specific to the episode, but it never makes you say “this is something brand new”. You collect coins and jellyfish to buy costumes, complete quests and experience a simple but fun SpongeBob adventure. They could have brought add-ons like making Patrick the second playable character, Bowser Jr. in Bowser’s Fury. At worst, he would do a job. They didn’t even do that. There is also the issue of some boss fights repeating themselves.

The Multiverses of the Sponge

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake review

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake doesn’t offer visually stunning graphics, but that’s not what was promised, after all, we’re playing SpongeBob. The episode designs are beautiful, the environment and character models, animations, lighting, cutscenes all look good. We seem to be playing a graphically advanced cartoon. The movements and facial animations of the characters definitely deserve praise.

All of the voice actors in the game come from the original cast, which is a big plus. Of course, I like the Turkish voice-overs in the first seasons more, but they don’t exist even in Turkey anymore, should that voice-over be in the game? The dialogues are of SpongeBob quality, some are very repetitive, your brain may burn if you play the game for a long time. Maybe it was just me, after all, I haven’t watched cartoons for like 10 years.

The music is prepared in accordance with SpongeBob and the worlds he visits. The ukulele is our indispensable instrument, and other instruments accompany it. Simple but beautiful music, I’m not sure if you can listen to it outside of the game, but it’s fun and funny pieces that are suitable for the atmosphere. It’s like they’re a little short for the chapters alone, we hear it ending and starting over, they’re already repeating, and it’s short!

Conclusion

I’ve seen SpongeBob cartoons before and played a lot of third-person platformer adventure games, and I’ve played some of them even though I haven’t finished Battle for Bikini Bottom. I did not have a chance to play the remake version released in 2020. The most enjoyable feeling I had in this game was nostalgia. When it was not possible to play games on the Internet, we loved games that can be played by two people on Playstation and PC.

At that time, there were all kinds of 3D platform games such as Bugs Bunny: Lost in Time, Bugs Bunny & Taz: Time Busters, Taz Wanted. The fact that Time Busters can be played by two people (with a single keyboard) increased my interest in the genre, causing me to play and finish all similar games. I didn’t experience this feeling while playing Battle for Bikini Bottom (not the remake version), but these games came to my mind all the time during Cosmic Shake and I enjoyed playing them.

SpongeBob SquarePants: The Cosmic Shake review

If you are looking for a fun and simple platform adventure game to play, if you like Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, I recommend this game to you. If you like SpongeBob cartoons and want to play a part yourself, it is a game that I can recommend again. However, I wish they had been a little more daring and made more than just a game with overly repetitive mechanics despite its short duration.

PC version of the game with a price tag of 400 TL Steam, Epic Storewith e and $40 tag on GOG on sale. On consoles, the price of the game, which has been published for PlayStation 4 – Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, is seen as 400 TL on previous generation consoles and 40 dollars on Switch. I suggest you try it at a good discount.
