Spider Man 4 with Tobey Maguire had already been released in

Spoilers for Spider-Man: No Way Home follow: Tom Holland is the first Spider-Man actor to receive a fourth Spider-Man part. Andrew Garfield’s series was canceled after just two films. Tobey Maguire created an extremely successful trilogy – which Sony would have loved to continue. Why didn’t it happen?

You can now stream Tobey Maguire’s comeback in Spider-Man: No Way Home alongside Tom Holland and Andrew Garfield on Netflix. We explain why the plans for a fourth part failed and what you missed.

The cast was set: Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire was in the starting blocks

Spider-Man 3 had grossed almost $900 million at the box office in 2007. Accordingly, there were no reasons to end the functioning series – although part 3 provided a satisfactory conclusion to the story of Peter, MJ and Harry (James Franco).

Back in 2007, Sam Raimi, director of the first three films, gathered a crew for Spider-Man 4:

  • Kirsten Dunst and Tobey Maguire should return to their familiar roles

  • James Vanderbilt (Zodiac) was set to write the screenplay (and scripts for Spider-Man 5 and Spider-Man 6), Variety reported

  • Sam Raimi would have returned as director
  • As The start date was May 6, 2011 issued.

These would have been Tobey Maguire’s opponents in Spider-Man 4

Spider-Man would have faced a handful of villains in his fourth adventure. However, only the following would probably have played larger roles:

  • Anne Hathaway was in concrete negotiations, one Mixture of Black Cat and Vulturess to play, real name Felicia Hardy

  • John Malkovich should Vulture embodied, later played by Michael Keaton in Spider-Man: Homecoming

  • Smaller appearances were planned for (among others) Kraven the Hunter, Mysterio and Rhino

Why did Spider-Man 4 never come?

During the film’s lengthy development, a large creative gap opened up between director Sam Raimi and the Sony studio. Raimi was not satisfied with the scripts (revised several times) that were presented to him, Deadline reported. Raimi ultimately doubted that he would be able to deliver a good film under these conditions and the increasing time pressure.

In January 2010, Raimi handed over the project and Sony then stopped development of the film entirely. Two and a half years later, The Amazing Spider-Man, the reboot of the series, was released in cinemas. Andrew Garfield replaced Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker.

Is there still a chance for Spider-Man 4 after No Way Home?

After the success of Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2021, rumors arose that Sam Raimi would still make his version of Spider-Man 4 with Tobey Maguire. Raimi expressed interest in the project, as did Kirsten Dunst, who did not appear in No Way Home. To date, nothing has come of the plans.

However, Spider-Man 4 with Tom Holland is firmly planned. From 2025, three more parts with the third Spider-Man actor are scheduled to appear.
