Founded in 1994, the Spice Girls are the world’s best-selling female group. Its “girl power” inspired the audience as well as other musicians.
The British Postal Service has released a set of commemorative stamps about the iconic pop group of the 90s, the Spice Girls.
The stamp set is the first in Britain to feature a female pop group. The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Queen, The Rolling Stones and Iron Maiden have previously received their own labels in Britain.
The series features 15 characters representing the members of the Spice Girls individually and at concerts around the world. The group was formed by Melanie Brown, Geri Halliwell, Melanie Chisholm, Emma Bunton and Victoria Beckham.
– When we founded the band, we couldn’t even dream that 30 years later we would be the first female band to have a set of stamps dedicated to them. That’s girl power! the band’s statement says.
The group has sold more than a hundred million records. The Spice Girls are the world’s best-selling female band, almost neck and neck with the American band The Supremes.
The lineup began to show signs of cracking in 1998, when Geri Halliwell was the first to leave. The band finally broke up in 2000.
The entire Spice Girls got back together briefly in 2012 for the closing ceremony of the London Olympics. The band toured as four members in 2019, without fashion designer Victoria Beckham.
