Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez says that he will send 10,000 soldiers and more police to the flooded area of Valencia for rescue and clearance work. According to Sanchez, the troops are sent at the request of regional leaders.
At least 211 people have died in the floods. In addition, dozens of people are still missing.
Devastating floods have tossed vehicles, collapsed bridges and covered cities in mud. It is the deadliest natural disaster in Spain in decades.
According to researchers, human-caused climate change increases the duration, frequency and intensity of extreme weather events. Extremes also become increasingly unpredictable and difficult to control.
