This Sunday, French referee François Letexier was appointed to officiate at the Euro 2024 final between Spain and England.
The Euro 2024 final will see Spain take on England this Sunday at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. Kick-off at 21:00.
A Frenchman in the final
After Clément Turpin who refereed the opening match between Germany and Scotland, French refereeing has once again been favoured by UEFA. Indeed, François Letexier has been appointed to referee the European Championship final between Spain and England. The last time a Frenchman refereed a match at this level was in 1988 when Michel Vautrot officiated at the final between the Netherlands and the USSR. Appointed for 10 European Cup matches this season, François Letexier is experiencing his first experience in a major international competition this summer. This Sunday evening, the Frenchman will become the youngest referee to officiate in a final.
Twelve years later
Having beaten France on Tuesday, Spain is back in the Euro final, twelve years later. In 2012, La Roja won against Italy. For this last match of the competition against England, Luis De La Fuente expects a complicated encounter: “It’s a final, it will be complicated and very balanced between the two best teams. These matches are decided on details and the one who makes the fewest mistakes will have a better chance of winning. You have to be hyper focused.” Regardless of the result in the final, the Spanish coach is proud of the progress made: “I am proud of the journey we have taken to get here, of the desire of the players, their talent, their efforts, they have earned the right to feel very proud of themselves. Nobody has given them anything and they are here, they have a present and a huge future, whatever happens tomorrow.”
In a press conference, De La Fuente spoke about the Spanish dynasty of the 2010s: “I think it’s a great generation, I’ve known many of them since the youth teams. Afterwards, we talk about legendary teams in the history of Spanish football. But we also want to make history. I have confidence in these players, as in others who aren’t here, to ensure a great future for Spanish football. But that doesn’t mean they’ll always win.” For this final, Spain will be able to count on the return of Dani Carvajal and Robin Le Normand, suspended in the semi-final. On the other hand, Pedri and Ayoze Perez will be in the stands, injured.
Break the spell
Three years after their missed home date against Italy, England are back in the Euro final where the Three Lions will challenge Spain. In a press conference, Gareth Southgate confided that he dreamed of this moment: “In the beginning, we visualized. When you’re trying to create dreams, you have to have a crystal clear picture of what you want to see at the end. And, you know, if we break that vision down, that’s where we want to go. The details that need to be fixed come into play. Over the last couple of years we’ve seen the improvements we need to make as a team. I think it lights a little fire for some people. For others, it’s different. You have to impact the group in different ways.”
The England coach wants to offer a special evening to the English: “We know what it would mean to everyone in England. We know what it would mean to us as a team, for the hard work that’s been put in, not just by this group of players, but by the players that have been with us for the last six or seven years. They’ve played a huge part in this journey with us and with all the staff that have been involved, it’s really been a huge collective effort. All of these people have helped create the culture that we have. And, yes, we’d like to give everyone a special night tomorrow.” Against La Roja, Luke Shaw should start on the left wing in place of Kieran Trippier.
