Spain and Mauritania agreed to cooperate on migrant traffic from West Africa to the Canary Islands.

Prime Minister of Spain Pedro Sánchez is currently on a visit to West Africa, during which he will visit Gambia and Senegal in addition to Mauritania. In Mauritania, he met, among others, the country’s president by Moahmed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouan.

According to the Spanish authorities’ estimate, there are currently around 200,000 people in Mauritania who would like to reach Spain’s autonomous Canary Islands by sea.

Prime Minister Sanchez is now trying to curb the number of migrants with different patterns of cooperation.

With Mauritania, Spain plans to negotiate a new court focused on migrant smuggling and tightening of other related laws.

As a counterweight, Spain and Mauritania plan to develop a new pilot project through which Mauritanian workers would be able to work in Spain. The project is going to focus on young and female Mauritanians.
