The Space Marines are too powerful for four players to go into battle. The developers of the upcoming co-op shooter have also noticed this.
What game is it? Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 is a new third-person shooter set in the dark Warhammer universe, coming out on September 9th. It will be the successor to the first part, Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, released in 2011.
Space Marines 2 is coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series.
Here you can see gameplay of the Space Marines moving across the battlefield:
4 Space Marines are too tough
Why only 3 and not 4 player? As the developers explained in an interview with the American magazine PC Gamer, they decided to model Space Marines 2 after the history and capabilities of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
In Warhammer 40k, the Space Marines are true superhumans with powerful abilities. They are genetically modified super soldiers whose mental and physical abilities far exceed those of a normal human. Yann Françoi, Creative Manager of Space Marines 2, also notes this:
When you read about Space Marines, you discover that they are superhuman to a truly insane degree. They are up to [zwei bis drei] meters tall, they have two or three functioning hearts.

Françoi also says that during development, Saber Interactive tried to send the Space Marines onto the battlefield in groups of four.
However, the developers felt that the game was too easy with 4 Space Marines: “Many people asked, ‘Why can’t up to four players join in?’ They [das Team] tried it and realized it was too easy… it was a massacre. So three was a good number.”
Why are Space Marines so strong? Space Marines are recruited as young individuals and as recruits undergo rigorous mental and physical training while undergoing genetic modifications.
Mentally and physically they have been modified so much that they could be called a subspecies of humans. Even the smallest of them reach a height of 2.5 meters and are about twice as wide due to their muscles and bones. During their training they receive 19 modified organs that give them a range of superhuman powers and steel them for battle.
This superhuman power of the Marines is also evident in the trailer for Space Marines 2, showing us how to wipe the floor with huge swarms of Tyranids. Further proof that they are simply too powerful to go into battle in 4s. The new trailer for Warhammer 40k: Space Marine 2 shows how to clean up with alien killer insects
