Mother Nathalie and her fifteen-year-old son Charly Vink find it difficult to understand why people stop adopting a grave, they say to News Square33. Four years ago they adopted two graves. The identity of one of the graves is unknown. In the other grave lies the Ukrainian Ivan Sereda. “Our soldier Ivan is lying next to a Russian. Then they were brothers in arms. Now it may well be that their grandsons or great-grandsons are fighting against each other.”
The daughter of ‘their’ identified soldier Ivan can no longer come to the Netherlands to visit her father’s grave. But she does know that Nathalie and Charly take care of it. “We really like the idea that she knows that.”
