In South Sudan, President Salva Kiir addressed the nation this Friday afternoon March 7, while the tensions between his camp and that of the vice-president, the opponent Riek Machar, remain at the highest. Since mid-February, in fact, a conflict has been taking place in Haut-Nil, a region of the northeast of the country, between the government army and the White Army, an allied militia of Riek Machar. In Nasir, the commander of the regular army, General David Majur Dak, besieged by the White Army, was to be evacuated by the UN this morning. But the operation turned to fiasco. The White Army attacked the UN helicopters, killing the general as well as 27 soldiers. An UN employee also died in the attack, and two others were injured. President Salva Kiir called for calm.
