South Korea’s ruling party leadership demands President Yoon’s suspension from office | News in brief

The president of South Korea declared a state of emergency

The leader of the president’s own conservative party says the lives of South Korean citizens will be at risk if President Yoon is not removed from office.

Leader of South Korea’s conservative ruling party Han Dong-hoon says that South Korea’s president Yoon Suk-yeol could put citizens in “great danger” if Yoon is not suspended from office.

– If President Yoon continues in his position, there is a considerable risk that extreme measures such as the declaration of a state of emergency may be repeated, says Han, the leader of the ruling party.

South Korean President Yoon triggered a political crisis in the country at the beginning of the week by declaring a state of emergency in the country, which in the end only lasted a few hours. It was opposed not only by the opposition, but also by Yoon’s own conservative party.

However, Parliament immediately voted to revoke the state of emergency and President Yoon soon announced that he would withdraw his decision.

South Korean opposition parties soon impeached the president. Parliamentarians from the president’s own ruling party have said they intend to oppose the impeachment. According to local media reports, the impeachment vote is scheduled to take place on Saturday.

On Thursday, the country’s police said they had begun to investigate the president as a suspect of insurrection.

South Korea’s main opposition party said on Friday that there have been reports of a new attempt to declare a state of emergency in the country. South Korea’s Democratic Party says its lawmakers are on high alert. The South Korean news agency Yonhap reported on the matter.

The party plans to hold an emergency meeting on Friday morning local time, Yonhap adds.
