According to South Korea, the intercontinental missile tested by North Korea last week was not a new type of missile, as North Korea claimed.
North Korea said last Friday it had successfully tested the Hwasong-17 missile for the first time.
However, South Korea and the United States have concluded that the missile fired would still have been a Hwasong-15, the South Korean defense ministry told AFP.
North Korea has already tested a similar missile in 2017.
The Hwasong-15 and -17 are both intercontinental ballistic missiles.
North Korea’s claim to test the new missile was likely, according to AFP, an attempt to compensate for a failed launch a couple of weeks ago where the missile exploded shortly after launch.
Analysts say North Korea would have launched Hwasong-17 at the time.
