A new arrest warrant is reported to have been issued for South Korea’s suspended president Yoon Suk-Yeol. This is because it had previously expired and investigators and the police had not succeeded in arresting him.
Yoon, who is facing an impeachment trial, has refused to leave his residence for days, despite diligent calls from, among others, the investigators at the anti-corruption agency CIO. He is surrounded by hundreds of loyal security guards and has also been supported by thousands of supporters who have protested attempts to arrest him.
Conservative Yoon Suk-Yeol sparked political chaos when he suddenly announced on December 3 that he was declaring a state of emergency with accompanying martial law, citing opposition paralyzing government work. He was stripped of presidential power on December 14, after parliament voted to impeach him.
