A rescue operation began on Monday January 13 to recover illegal miners still underground in an abandoned gold mine in the town of Stilfontein, southwest of Johannesburg. A court in the country ordered the government last week to immediately pay a team of professionals to organize the recovery of survivors, as well as the bodies of deceased miners.
