As announced, there was no suspense between the powerful Springboks and Romania, 19th nation in the World Rugby rankings.
With a reshuffled team, the Springboks, reigning world champions, stunned the Romanian XV from the start of the match, with four tries in the first twelve minutes of play.
Twelve tests at the end
The Springboks, potential opponents of France or New Zealand in the quarter-finals, then repelled the rare Romanian incursions into their 22 meters, while punishing them with a total of twelve tries, including two hat-tricks from Cobus Reinach, holder of the day behind the rainbow scrum, and Makazole Mapimpi.
The South Africans, who had already improved their success after only 12 minutes (26-0), crossed the Romanian line twelve times, as many as the Irish a week earlier against the same opponents (82-8). The Oaks were only Sunday extras, with the exception of full-back Simonescu, one of the few to survive in the turmoil.
