Triple jumper Senni Salminen was injured in the SM halls, but survived the foot injury with a start. Now the eyes are firmly fixed on the prestigious summer competitions and the new Finnish record.
Senni Salminen started the reign with the Finnish outdoor track championship in his pocket and the preparation went well in the fall. The results of Salminen’s strength and speed tests, who has been training at Imatra since October, rose sharply. His expectations were high.
However, Hallikausi got a dull decision in February, when the fourth round of the SM championships ended with an injury already in the middle of picking up speed. Salminen felt a tingling sensation in the soles of his feet, after which he left the competition venue on crutches.
Now Salminen says with relief that the injury to the sole of the foot was mild. He has just gotten rid of the cast he had to wear on his leg for two weeks.
– The condition of the leg is good. The injury did not require surgery, and I survived with little trouble. Today I got the cast off and the leg already feels surprisingly good on the first day.
The injury did not interrupt training either, as the triple jumper only rested for one day after the injury in the SM halls. According to Salminen, the coach Matti Monosella immediately had new plans in mind.
– It was essential to try to maintain the muscle mass of the leg, because it was not possible to place weight on it for a while. Jumping exercises were immediately performed for the healthy leg, perhaps a bit daringly, and nerve-wracking exercises have also been important.
– I have a pretty insightful and creative coach, so it hasn’t been boring in training, Salminen grins.
Although the indoor season ended sadly, the injury did not interfere with the defector’s plans or goals for the summer.
Salminen says he is chasing Kristiina Mäkelän Hungry for the Finnish record and is determined to turn the setback into a positive asset.
– The injury makes the preparation just a little more interesting and exciting. The Olympic year cannot go easily. Something had to come, so let’s accept this. When I find my full potential, anything can happen at the European Championships.
