Sony’s new headphones for the PS5 could be a brilliant product if two important things are right

Sony presented the official earbuds for the PS5 in a very short teaser. There is not much information yet, but MeinMMO editor Benedikt Schlotmann is certain: If two important things are right, the product can only be good.

Sony is officially bringing new hardware to the PS5, including a new dedicated audio device for the PS5: wireless earbuds, i.e. in-ear headphones that you put in your ears. This is the first time that Sony has introduced in-ear headphones for a gaming console. So far there have only been over-ear headsets, such as the Inzone series or the official PS5 headset.

Why is this a big topic for me? Many wireless in-ear headphones don’t connect easily to the PS5, have uncomfortably high latency, or don’t offer options for customizing the sound. This is also due to the fact that the PS5 does not officially support third-party Bluetooth devices, or only with detours.

I’ve now tested and tried out a number of in-ear headphones and now have two points that are really important to me, apart from the sound.

Ergonomics and battery life are sticking points

Two things in particular have to be right, apart from the good sound that the headphones hopefully offer. At least Sony has good audio experts who can already show with the WF-1000XM4, for example, what dynamic, balanced and very fine sound you can get with in-ear headphones.

Point 1: On the one hand there is the ergonomics. Anyone who has ever had ill-fitting in-ears in their ears knows that these things can hurt like hell after a few hours and you just want to rip them out of your ears.

And ergonomics is always an ongoing topic for me. No matter how great the sound, no matter how powerful and haunting, it’s no fun if my ears bleed. From my point of view, the sound is not quite as perfect, but the parts fit properly.

You could now reply: why should you buy headphones if the sound is not good? But then I counter: What should I do with a great sound if the ergonomics are just botched?

Point 2: On the other hand, the battery life is a big issue for me. The well-informed Tom Henderson speaks of about 5 hours of battery life (via insider-gaming.com). This is quite sufficient for headphones if you don’t want to play with them all evening.

A quick charge function could also be a plus here. Because many devices with such a feature promise: after 30 minutes of charging you can play again for 2 hours.

At least here I hope for an exciting product that should come onto the market sometime at the end of 2023. We’ll see how good it really is in the end.

More tech for the PS5: The look doesn’t look quite as good for the new handheld. Because “Project Q” has already caused a lot of displeasure among the viewers. You can read why the product is so controversial on MeinMMO:
