Sony Honda Mobility (SHM), a joint venture between Sony and Honda, has confirmed that the two companies will make a big announcement today at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas on January 4.
While confirming the date and time of the CES 2023 keynote, Sony also announced that Sony Honda Mobility will be on stage.
Sony Honda Mobility hasn’t revealed much about its upcoming vehicle, but little that it says is truly exciting. The joint venture plans to begin production of its first electric vehicle in 2026, with a focus on North American production and online sales in this market. Japan will be the second market, followed by launch in Europe.
While many details are yet to be confirmed, Sony Honda Mobility has stated that the car, which has yet to be named, may be capable of Level 3 autonomous driving in certain conditions and Level 2+ in a wider range of settings. The company also suggested adding value to the tool through the use of subscription services. There are also rumors that the car’s infotainment system could include a full-blown PlayStation 5. (Perhaps PlayStation 6) according to the release timing of the vehicle
Honda will contribute its vehicle manufacturing expertise and engineering capabilities to the joint venture with Sony. It is not yet clear whether Honda or Sony Honda Mobility (SHM) will be responsible for after-sales support.
Sony Honda Mobility has announced that pre-orders for the first car produced by the joint venture will be received in the first half of 2025.
