Sony has unveiled a major update for the PS5. This pleases MeinMMO editor Benedikt Schlotmann in particular, because the update on 7.9. a feature for the PlayStation 5 that he has been waiting for for a long time.
Sony regularly introduces new functions and features for the PS5. After the big update with support for an additional SSD came in the summer, there is now another big update.
This time there are again a lot of new functions. There is one feature that I am particularly happy about: the official support of WQHD. A resolution that is finding its way into more and more gamers.
Finally I can use a WQHD monitor with the PS5
What does the new update bring anyway? The new update for the PS5 brings a whole handful of improvements and new features (via blog.playstation.com). These include:
Especially the last update with the WQHD support is an important point for me, which I’ve been waiting for since the release of the console. Because I play on the PlayStation 5 mainly on my gaming monitor and it offers me a resolution of 1440p. But this is exactly where the problem lies.
So far I could only use the PS5 on my monitor on Full HD. The difference between Full HD and WQHD is huge. A colleague of mine explained why a WQHD monitor is one of his top gaming purchases and I can only agree with him.
Firmware update for the PS5 brings feature that makes a huge difference
Is the difference really that big? If you don’t believe me how visible the difference between Full HD and WQHD is, then take a look at the following YouTube video. You can see a lot more and, above all, the textures look sharper and clearer. Incidentally, the pixel density from 1920×1080 to 2,560 x 1,440 pixels also increases significantly, which means that more details are recognizable and the picture simply looks “better”.
Why am I not using 4K? On the one hand, 4K monitors have been simply too expensive for me up to now. I don’t own a 4K TV either, just an older Full HD TV.
In addition, I installed a Radeon RX 6700 XT in my computer after years of riding a Radeon RX 570. The RX 6700 XT is a graphics card from AMD that is ideal for resolutions up to and including WQHD and only to a limited extent for 4K. For me, WQHD has therefore been the best compromise between performance and quality. I am all the more pleased about the update that Sony has now released.
However, there is still one downside: VRR supported on PS5 is only supported on Full HD and 4K video output, but not on 1440p (WQHD). VRR ensures that the frame rate between the monitor and PC/console are synchronized. This is to prevent unsightly tearing effects (so-called tearing). But maybe Sony will add this feature later.
For a long time, the lack of WQHD support was also a reason why you shouldn’t buy a PS5. This means I won’t have to compromise on image quality in the future when playing on the PS5:
