Sony halts PlayStation sales in Russia

Sony said yesterday that it has stopped selling hardware and software, including suspending PlayStation Store operations in Russia, in response to the country’s invasion of Ukraine for no reason. The move comes a week after Ukraine’s deputy prime minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, called for tech companies like Sony and Microsoft to withdraw from Russian markets.

In a statement from the company, “Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) joins the global community to call for peace in Ukraine. We have suspended all shipments of software and hardware, the launch of Gran Turismo 7, and PlayStation Store operations in Russia. To support humanitarian assistance, Sony Group Corporation announced that it has donated $2 million to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the international non-governmental organization Save the Children to support the victims of this tragedy.

Sony isn’t the first western company to pull its business out of Russia. Microsoft did the same with Electronic Arts on March 4. CD Projekt has stopped selling both physical and digital products, including GOG. In addition, world giants such as Shell, Apple and McDonald’s announced that they stopped their activities in the country.
