Sony could unveil the new version of its PlayStation Plus subscription in March

Sony could unveil the new version of its PlayStation Plus

Codenamed Spartacus, Sony is preparing an overhaul of its subscription program for gamers, with a merger of PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now services. Currently, the PlayStation Plus subscribers get access to new free games every month, plus multiplayer, and discounts. To stream PlayStation 2/3/4 games on a PC or on a PlayStation 4/5 console, you must subscribe to the PlayStation Now service (see our buying guide).

According to VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb, Sony will soon revamp all of this and offer three PlayStation Plus subscription plans:

  • PlayStation Plus Essential : for 10 dollars per month, you access new free games every month, as well as multiplayer mode.
  • PlayStation Plus Extra : for 13 dollars per month, you have the advantages of the Essential version, plus a catalog of old games to download.
  • PlayStation Plus Premium : for 16 dollars per month you have the advantages of the Extra version, plus the possibility of playing in streaming, access to classic titles and the right to test new games (full versions, but for a limited time).

You will therefore need the PlayStation Plus Premium subscription if you want to play in streaming. We see that the Essential formula is similar to the current PlayStation Plus subscription (from €5 to €8.99 per month depending on the commitment).

Sony has not confirmed the names of its new formulas, nor their prices. It is therefore possible that there will still be changes before the official announcement, which should take place in the month of March. The manufacturer should begin testing its new services in the coming weeks.
