Apparently, information from an internal Sony meeting has been made public. It was a Q&A between the CEO and Jim Ryan and some employees. While Sony is fighting its competitor Microsoft before the world’s antitrust authorities, the CEO does not see the Xbox Game Pass as a major threat.
The US site “Insider-Gaming” and its author Tom Henderson (a well-known leaker and industry insider) report from an anonymous source from Sony’s environment what Sony CEO Jim Ryan said about the competition for Xbox Game Pass target.
This is the situation:
Report Says Sony CEO Doesn’t See Game Pass as Competition
What’s in the report? Author Tom Henderson did not reveal where the statements came from. His source appears to have asked for anonymity. However, the statements are said to have been made in a Q&A – a meeting between employees and the Sony boss.
Accordingly, Ryan sees no competition in the Xbox Game Pass, because the numbers could not keep up with the PlayStation subscription service “PS Plus” and the dynamics, i.e. the user growth of the Game Pass, pose no danger.
Here’s what Ryan reportedly said:
If we look at Game Pass, seem [die Zahlen] to weaken. If we look at Game Pass, we have sold more PS5s in 2 years than they have collected subscribers in 6-7 years.
We’re close to 50 million subscribers and they’re in their low 20’s. But there’s more to do to increase that number.
Sony CEO Kim Ryan, according to Insider-Gaming.com report
Although Sony is fighting hard against Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, the reason, according to the report, isn’t Xbox Game Pass.
However, Sony has previously stated that they would like to pursue a different strategy. Instead of subscribing to big games on the release day, they want to focus more on service and free2play games in the future. They want to make more games like GTA Online or Destiny.
The purchase of Destiny studio Bungie was an important part of this strategy. Who knows what popular Sony brands will merge into an MMO in the next few years.
The deal between Microsoft and Activision Blizzard continues to be investigated in the UK, EU and US. The US antitrust authority, the FTC, is even pursuing a lawsuit in order to possibly prevent the merger.
However, Activision Blizzard and Microsoft have confirmed that they absolutely want the deal. Everything seems possible at the moment – a deal with or without restrictions and the complete cancellation of the takeover.
