In Dragon Ball, people also go about their everyday lives on Earth. There are numerous parallels between the characters and the real world – but there’s one thing most people think Goku is missing.
Why is Son Goku so special? Unlike most other characters in Dragon Ball, Son Goku has a last name. In Chapter 425 of the Dragon Ball manga, Videl reveals her colleague Gohan to be Saiyaman and speculates that Goku is his father.
She comes up with this because Son Goku and Son Gohan have the same family name. She says there aren’t many people with a last name these days.
So it’s no coincidence that we don’t know the family names of Bulma, Vegeta and the others. They simply don’t have a last name. Akira Toriyama, the mangaka of Dragon Ball, could therefore only let off steam with first names.

Are there other people with last names? Son Goku’s family isn’t the only one with last names that we get to know in Dragon Ball. Akira Toriyama revealed in Super Exciting Guide: Character Volume (via Kazenshuu) that it is unusual for families to have last names, especially in the area where Mr. Satan lives.
That’s why there are other families that have a surname. Some examples we know from the anime are:
A rumor has spread throughout the community that Bulma’s family’s last name is Letter. However, that is only her father’s first name. Characters like Tao BaiBai and Tenshinhan also don’t have a last name. Her name is her full first name.
What is his last name actually? Son Goku’s family name is Son. That’s why his children also have Son in their names. Only Chi-Chi seems to have decided against taking Son Goku’s last name at the wedding.
This is also the reason why Piccolo sometimes just calls Son Goku in Japanese. In Japan it is more polite to call other people by their last name.
Pan, Son Goku’s granddaughter, also almost got the same last name as the Son family. But for that she would have had to be born a boy. Chi-Chi would have already had the right name for the newborn: Dragon Ball: According to Chi-Chi, Son Goku’s granddaughter could have had a completely different name
