A fire broke out in the maquis in Ayvacık district at around 16.30. Those who saw the flames reported the situation to the forest and fire brigade. Following the notice, many air and land vehicles were dispatched to the region.
The fire spread rapidly under the influence of the wind and reached the Ancient City of Assos.
ATHENA TEMPLE WAS ALSO AFFECTED BY THE FLAMES
The 7,000-year-old Assos Ruins and the Temple of Athena, which are among the well-preserved examples of the Greek city states where Plato’s students, especially Aristotle, operated within the borders of Behrakale village, were affected by the fire in the forest fire.
Assos Ruins and Athena Temple, affected by the flames, were viewed with a drone.
THEY CAME AMONG THE FLAMES
The water tank belonging to the Çanakkale Regional Forestry Directorate, which intervened in the fire, was engulfed in flames. As Arazöz surrendered to the flames, the personnel left the vehicle at the last minute.
ASSOS IS CLOSED
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism said, “The fire that broke out near the Assos archaeological site in Çanakkale was brought under control, and the cultural assets were not damaged. The Assos archaeological site was closed to visitors on June 27, 28 and 29 so that cooling work and necessary detection work could be carried out.”
