Some PS5 Pro models are hotter and louder than others

The PS5 Pro impresses with strong performance, but provides mixed experiences due to different fan models. Users report high noise levels, annoying beeping and heat development.

What exactly is the problem? Some PS5 Pro owners are finding that their consoles are louder than expected. On resetEra, X and Reddit, experiences with Sony’s new high-end console are compared. The first impressions show that different fan models are installed by the manufacturers Delta Electronics and Foxconn – with different results.

Some users find the Delta fans to be louder, while others find the Foxconn models to be more annoying. There is also disagreement as to whether the PS5 Pro dissipates heat more poorly depending on the fan model or whether it is just poorly positioned.

How does this manifest itself in practice? Measurements by GamePro have shown that the PS5 Pro reaches a noise level of 37 decibels under full load right next to the console and 28 decibels at a distance of two meters. For comparison: 30 decibels correspond to a quiet whisper.

However, some users on Reddit and resetEra report a high-frequency beeping sound that, depending on their individual sensitivity, is perceived as annoying. We are talking about so-called coil whine. The so-called coil whine occurs when components vibrate due to the current flow and produce a high-frequency sound. This high frequency is primarily associated with the Delta fan model.

Contrary to some opinions, poorer heat dissipation due to the different fans is not clear. The PS5 Pro generates up to 220 watts of waste heat under full load, as tests by PCGH show. This is derived from the underside and the rear. Since the fans are almost identical, it is unlikely that the heat generated by the PS5 Pro depends on them.

Foxconn or Delta? It remains a matter of luck

What does this mean for buyers? The different fan models make the purchase a bit of a gamble, with buyers not knowing which model is installed in their console and what noise to expect. Some users have therefore ordered two PS5 Pros to reduce the risk.

You can now find many videos and comparisons on YouTube and Reddit in which the different fan models of the PS5 Pro are shown and tested. The technology YouTuber frankyfife, for example, removed both fans and compared the design, and someone on Reddit describes their experiences with both model variants.

So you can listen in advance to how loud or high-pitched the noise of the individual models is and consider whether that would bother you. Important: Everyone perceives noises differently. What is hardly noticeable to one person can be extremely annoying to another.

Are there any solutions or recommendations? There is currently no official way to identify the installed fan model before purchase. When it comes to the heat generated by the PS5 Pro, enough space is the most important factor – especially if it is in a closed TV cabinet. If the ventilation paths are blocked, the temperature in the case rises, which leads to more intensive and louder cooling. According to PCGH, Sony’s official stand also slightly hinders air circulation on the underside, but you should definitely avoid completely blocked ventilation paths (e.g. by objects).

Sony’s latest high-end console has a decisive advantage over previous models. What Nvidea has already done with DLSS, the Playstation can now also do with the so-called PSSR.
