some inherited EU laws will survive Brexit disgruntled Tory wing

Post-Brexit Britain was due to get rid of 4,000 laws inherited from the European Union this year. It was a campaign promise from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Finally, only 600 texts should be deleted. A decision that annoys in the ranks of the conservatives.

With our correspondent in London, Emily Wine

The right wing of the Conservative Party, the pro-Brexit, accuses Rishi Sunak of having seriously broken his word by giving up the deadline of December 31 to abolish the laws inherited from the European Union. The very conservative group of deputies ERG (European Research Group) is also calling on the government to reconsider its decision. For these elected officials, always quite aggressive towards the public service, the executive bends in the face of the laziness of the administration.

The Secretary of State for Trade, behind the decision, ensures that the objective remains the same: to get rid of the influence of Brussels in British legislation. According to Kemi Badenoch, only the method changes: rather than looking for the laws to keep, the administration must rather establish which ones can be abolished. The minister, who is targeting Downing Street in the medium term, believes that the initial project involved too many uncertainties for British businesses.

Many sectors were concerned about the consequences of this ” legislative bonfire as the government calls it. European laws concern sectors as varied as employee protection, water quality and animal welfare.
