Despite long-closed borders and UN Security Council sanctions, they would be still 100,000 North Koreans working abroad. The report of the committee of experts on sanctions against North Korea specifies the sectors in which this workforce, often the victim of exploitation, operates. Active in around forty countries, these workers operate in information technology, construction and health.

This historic practice of the regime should have ended in December 2019, the deadline by which all countries had to have repatriated North Korean workers, according to Security Council Resolution 2397. But experts assure that not all respect the sanctions.

Half a billion dollars in revenue for Pyongyang

Two countries in particular host the bulk of the troops, according to the report, which does not cite their names. The presence of North Korean workers in Chinaor loggers and construction workers in the Orient Russian have been documented numerous times.

These foreign workers represent more than $500 million in annual income for Pyongyang. A figure that could rise significantly. Experts assure that once the borders open, the regime should send many workers abroad. He is said to have concluded agreements for the settlement of 400,000 North Koreans outside the country.
