Sogin Artizzu The safety of nuclear power plants in Italy

(Finance) – “It is necessary that we as Sogin, as a government, make a greater effort in communication, in dialogue with the territories. We have started a public debate for the first time in Italy on issues related to large infrastructures. It is very important continue on this path because although there are currently all these oppositions at work we realize that something is changing and it is changing especially among young people. There is a thirst for knowledge of everything that is nuclear because what must to be clear is that everything that has been said so far is not true or, at least, is only partially true. We need to understand what that part is. We therefore need a great communication effort, a great effort in nuclear literacy. And dialogue with the territories is necessary because the power plants are built in a territory. I believe we must continue along this path. I believe that in a few years young people will blame my generation for having denied them this source of energy for a long time and for having denied them a technological future that they desire.” This is what he said Gian Luca Artizzu, CEO of the Sogin Group on the edge ofmeeting “Nuclear in Italy in the energy transition: sustainability and independence”, organized by the Ugl Chimici in the Caduti di Nassiriya room of the Senate.

He spoke about the need to distinguish between danger and risk. On the radioactive waste management and safety front Where are we at today regarding power plants?

“The safety of the power plants has never failed. I can tell you that we are 44% of the way through dismantling and, recently, we opened the vessel of the Garigliano power plant: it is the first experience ever in Italy on this point. The vessel would the heart of the power plant where the nuclear reaction takes place. All this was done with the utmost safety and with the utmost expertise which is all Italian. We managed to do this with our subsidiary Nucleco, so it is almost entirely a home-made job and with which we are very satisfied. The management of all these operations takes place with some of the most solid procedures in the entire technological world, so much so that if we use nuclear protocols for any other dangerous matter – I am talking, for example, of pollution from heavy chemicals or even by armaments – we are able to restore and bring to a resolution by inertizing all these problems”.
