The Chatham Girls Minor Softball Association is hoping some members of the public will step up to the plate to provide a financial pinch hit to help it recover from a recent theft.

The non-profit that serves about 200 kids had its clubhouse broken into on June 22 resulting in “the theft of a substantial number of items and equipment, including a complete clean-out of our canteen stock and essential kitchen equipment that our association heavily relies on,” said CGMSA vice-president Caress Lee.

Association president Sara Hazell said the volunteers “put a lot of work, a lot of time and a lot of dedication into helping this program run successfully.”

She said the canteen, which employs a high school student, is not designed to be a major fundraiser.

“We don’t upsell our products,” Hazell said.

She added it’s just nice to be able to offer something to the family members and friends who come out to watch the games.

Lee said the clubhouse is like a second home during the year.

The clubhouse is where summer camp is hosted, planning meetings and registration are held and equipment is stored.

“As a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting our community and providing safe, fun and affordable experiences for youth across Chatham-Kent, this burglary has dealt a severe blow to our efforts,” Lee said. “The loss of these resources is not taken lightly.”

The CGMSA launched a GoFundMe to raise $3,000 to help recoup the cost of replenishing the canteen and kitchen equipment, reinforcing the front and back doors of the clubhouse and installing a security system to deter future break-ins.

At last check the online fundraiser generated $2,500 in donations.

Hazell said any money raised above the $3,000 sought will go into programming, equipment and covering costs for uniforms.
