The decision to place the new disbursement authority in Södertälje was scrapped for fear of criminal infiltration, writes Dagens Nyheter.
– I think it was very reckless of the previous government to even consider the idea of putting such an important authority in Södertälje, when we know that that particular municipality has very big problems with attempts at infiltration, financial crime and other things. That’s what the municipal management says themselves, says Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson (M) to DN.
It was also difficult to secure premises with the right security class in Södertälje, which played a role in the decision to place the authority in Stockholm instead, according to Svantesson.
While the city has been open about the fact that there have been problems with criminal influence on public activities, Södertälje is one of the cities that has worked most clearly against the problem. That is why the S government chose to place the authority there.
– Södertälje is a municipality that has really excelled in combating welfare fraud and there are good experiences there in practice of cooperation between authorities, said then finance minister Mikael Damberg (S) to TT in March 2022.
