Soccer: PSG knock Barcelona out of Champions League after early expulsion

Last week Barcelona won 3-2 in Paris.

And much spoke for Catalan promotion, after Raphinha sent in 1-0 in the twelfth minute of Tuesday’s second leg.

But barely 20 minutes later, a situation occurred that changed the quarter-final considerably.

PSG’s joy: “Fantastic”

Ronald Araújo was sent off after bringing down PSG winger Bradley Barcola.

With one man less, Barcelona conceded four straight goals and Kylian Mbappé became the match winner with his two goals. The 4–1 victory means that the French win the double meeting with a total of 6–4.

– It’s a fantastic feeling. We worked very hard and we are very proud to be in the semi-finals, says Achraf Hakimi in TV4 Play’s broadcast.

Referee criticism from Barcelona

It was all the more disappointing in Barcelona.

– Everyone is very disappointed. It is not his (Araújo’s) fault that we are eliminated but it is difficult to play with ten players for so long, says Frenkie de Jong, who is also critical of the referee’s decision to give a red card to coach Xavi.

– Players and coaches show emotion during matches like this. But when you show feelings for this referee, he shows yellow or red card immediately. It shouldn’t be allowed to happen at this level.

In the semifinals, PSG faces Dortmund, who beat Atletico Madrid 4–2 (5–4 on aggregate).
