Soccer: Norway overtaken by Austria in the Nations League: “Embarrassing”

The teams went into the half-time break at 1–1, after goals from Marko Arnautovic and Alexander Sörloth.

But after the break, Austria put their foot down and pulled away strongly. Arnautovic became a two-goal scorer when he once again sent the home team into the lead after goals from the penalty spot.

And in the 71st minute, Austria scored their fifth of the evening when Michael Gregoritsch headed in to make it 5-1.

– What happens in the second half is embarrassing. We lose control completely. It was fairly even in the first half, but it’s terrible how we fall apart, says midfielder Sander Berge according to Norwegian TV2.

Revenge after the previous meeting

A revenge for Austria, who lost (1–2) in Norway in September. Before Sunday’s game, the Norwegian national team had picked up seven points in the opening three games in the Nations League’s B division.

The result means that Austria takes over first place in the group thanks to better results in head-to-head meetings.

– If there is anyone who has to take this on, it is me. We have to stop the bleeding after 1-3. There is far too much back and forth, says national team captain Ståle Solbakken, who according to VG is asked why he is the right man to lead Norway forward:

– I have answered that before. I have a contract, we have full trust in each other and we work hard. I see no reason why we shouldn’t have it.
