Soccer: Netherlands through to semi-finals – two goals in six minutes against Turkey

The Netherlands were favorites for the quarter-final against Turkey – but it was the Turks who got paid first.

Large parts of the Turkish team remained in the penalty area after a corner and they took care of that.

  • Arda Güler hit a well-aimed and precise cross and Samet Akaydin reached the highest. The centre-back was able to head in the lead goal from close range, which really got the crowd going.

Turkey then had several clear chances to increase the lead, but instead came the equalizer – and once again it was a corner situation in the centre.

    Six minutes decided

After a short variation, Memphis Depay’s cross found Stefan de Vrij, who unmarked headed in 1-1 behind Mert Günok. But it didn’t end there. Six minutes later, an unfortunate Mert Müldür headed in 2–1 in an own goal.

Turkey chased an equalizer and created several chances. But Bart Verbruggen made a decisive save in added time and saved the Dutch victory.

    – We were much better in the second half and were more dangerous then. We will definitely play the final. I have faith in our team, says Denzel Dumfries.

In Wednesday’s semi-final, the Netherlands face England, a match that SVT broadcasts. Spain will face France in the other semi-final.
