Soccer: Ivory Coast champions after unlikely tournament

The host nation Ivory Coast was in the dock in the final against Nigeria.

William Troost-Ekong had ensured that Nigeria, who defeated Ivory Coast in the group stage, took the lead at the break. But the Ivorians wanted something else.

The Ivory Coast took over more and more and in the 62nd minute Franck Kessie equalised.

The winning goal came 20 minutes later.

Simon Adingra was responsible for a fine preparatory work and sent in a cross that Sébastien Haller acrobatically put into the net.

2–1 was also the final result and for the Ivory Coast it is telling that the final victory came after drama.

Messy championship

The team has had a messy championship, to say the least, where they lost two out of three group stage matches and chose to fire national team captain Jean-Louis Gasset.

Despite that, they made it to the playoffs and later to the final after, among other things, a huge drama in the quarterfinals against Mali.

It is the third time in history that the Ivory Coast has taken home the African Championships.
