When the NFL team Kansas City, which later won the Super Bowl, defeated Miami in a playoff game in January this year, it was freezing – minus 20 degrees at the start of the game. In addition, freezing winds blew, which produced a cooling effect and temperatures that were at times minus 33 degrees.
Despite the bitter cold, many spectators were present, but some of them have now had to pay a high price to see their team.
According to the hospital Research Medical Center in Missouri, twelve people, several of whom were at the game between Miami and Kansas City, have been forced to have amputations because they froze various body parts. Mostly it is fingers and toes that have been operated on.
The hospital also states that more amputations are likely to be required in the coming weeks as the frostbite’s injuries “develop”.
