Traveling by train is a good choice for the environment as well as comfortable with a bistro and access to toilets along the entire journey. But it’s not as much fun when there are delays, missed changes and canceled departures.

Last year was a record year for the number of canceled trains and delays. It went to the level that SJ’s CEO Monica Lingegård went out and apologized to all the passengers.

If your train is delayed, you can receive delay compensation from SJ. How much compensation you get depends on how long the journey is or how late the train is, writes SJ on its website.

If your journey is shorter than 150 kilometers, counted from the train’s first to last station, this applies:

  • 50 percent compensation of the ticket price if 20 minutes late.
  • 75 percent compensation of the ticket price in the event of a 40-minute delay.
  • 100 percent compensation of the ticket price in the event of a 60-minute delay.
  • If your journey is at least 150 kilometers, counted from the train’s first to last station, this applies:

  • 25 percent compensation of the ticket price in the event of an hour’s delay.
  • 50 percent compensation of the ticket price in the event of a two-hour delay.

    You will then receive SEK 1,433 in compensation

    What is the maximum you can receive in compensation for delay?

    If your planned trip is shorter than 150 kilometers and the train is at least 20 minutes late, you can get up to SEK 1,433 in compensation per trip, to find another means of transport.

    If your journey is shorter than 150 kilometers and it is delayed for at least 60 minutes, you are entitled to food and accommodation if necessary. You can also choose to cancel your trip and get your money back.
