Social criticism, sex and a number of moments of shock – what is Infinity Pool about?
Actually, James Foster (Alexander Skarsgård) and his wife Em (Cleopatra Coleman) just want to spend a relaxing luxury vacation on the island of La Tolqa. James, who earns his living as a writer, feels burned out and is looking for new sources of inspiration.
However, while on a trip with another couple, James has a serious accident and runs over a native with his car. For this he faces the death penalty on La Tolqa. But there is a solution: if he pays a certain fee, his body will be cloned and the clone executed in his place.
As a result, vacationers on the island can afford whatever they want, provided they have enough money to keep new clones paying for their own crimes. James, who, in contrast to his wife, finds this concept extremely fascinating, gets sucked into a brutal, cruel maelstrom of ever new crossings of boundaries, one of which is more shocking than the other…
Why is an infinity pool worth it?
The latest work from Possessor creator Brandon Cronenberg divides moviegoers – and that is mainly due to the basic concept of the film. Because infinity pool lets one moment of shock after the next follow, without taking any longer time for individual questions and problems that have been raised.
Our Editor-in-Chief Lisa Ludwig sums it up in her review of the film: “After 117 minutes of running time remains […] a certain disappointment. About the fact that the film believes so little in its own ideas that it prefers to shock instead. Nevertheless, Infinity Pool is worthwhile for fans of wacky science fiction and brutal horror flicks. Because Cronenberg’s work not only has a star cast to offer, but also moves so far away from the mainstream in many places that you can definitely expect a unique home cinema experience.
