Old boats made of plastic and fiberglass are not good for the environment. Especially not if they have started to leak. Therefore, the Swedish Maritime Administration has contributed SEK 3 million this year to boats that need to be scrapped.
Can cost hundreds of thousands to scrap
The money is used for premiums that make it cheaper to scrap boat wrecks that weigh between 200 and 3000 kilos. According to Alexandra Claeson, manager of the guest harbor in Nynäshamn, a larger boat can cost as much as SEK 200,000 to recycle.
The last time premiums were used was in 2020. At the same time, more boats are bought than are scrapped.
